Contemporary Art Translation Grant

This grant aims to support the creation of high quality English-language translations of materials related to Japanese contemporary art, such as artist portfolios, in order to disseminate information about its current state and diversity overseas.

Applications for the 2022 Contemporary Art Translation Grant are scheduled to open in early September.

Application Guidelines

Multilingualization is being promoted in various fields in the response to the internationalization of Japan and increased inbound tourism. However, there is still much work to be done in terms of conveying the current state and diversity of Japanese contemporary art overseas. This grant will support the creation of high-quality translations in order to widely disseminate information about Japanese contemporary art overseas.


This grant aims to support the creation of high level English-language translations of materials related to Japanese contemporary art, such as artist portfolios and art books, in order to disseminate information about Japan’s current and diverse contemporary arts activities.

Eligibility Criteria

Non-profit organizations active in the field of contemporary art. (Regardless of type of legal entity)
Costs for the translation into English of Japanese texts relating to Japanese contemporary art, specifically the following:

  • 1) Costs for translating artist materials such as artist files or statements
  • 2) Costs for translating subtitles and commentary (captions) that accompany a work of art
  • * Applications from individuals will not be accepted.
  • * Proofreading by native speakers of English must be included in the translation work.
  • * It is a condition of the grant that permission to make the translation already be obtained from the copyright holder (author) or that a contract be already entered into.
  • * Translations for online media are acceptable.
  • * Costs for translations from English to Japanese, or verbal interpretation, are not eligible
  • * Applicants who have been awarded other grants by this Foundation this financial year are not eligible.

Size of the Grant

20 million yen is planned to be distributed in total
Each successful applicant is expected to be awarded between 300,000 and 2 million yen.

Period for Eligible Activities

The period covered by the grant is one year from December 2021 to the end of December 2022, and the translation work must be completed during this period. It does not matter if the translated text is published after this period.

Use of the Awarded Grant

Translation costs from Japanese to English (including native check costs).
Fees associated with communicating with translators, meeting fees, and materials fees may be included.
Costs associated with the publication of translations may not be included.

Schedule from Application to Payment of the Grant

  • 1) Application Period: Wednesday, September 8 – Midday, Tuesday, October 5, 2021 (*Applications must arrive no later than 12 p.m. midday on October 5.)
  • 2) Completion of selection: Scheduled for mid-December.
  • 3)
    Submit the Detailed Statement of Uses of the Grant (a statement of payments made, including the translation invoice) and the translation (original Japanese and the translated English) within 30 days after the translation work in question is completed.
    • * Details of the native check (amount, contractor name) must also be included in the statement of payments made.
  • 4)
    Grant payment: It is planned that grants will be paid about 60 days after the translation work is completed and the Detailed Statement of Uses of the Grant has been submitted.
    • * Payment of the grant will be made after the translation work is completed based on the content of the Detailed Statement of Uses of the Grant and the translated text.
    • * However, if the application amount is exceeded, the application amount will be the maximum that will be paid. If the actual amount paid falls below the cost written in the application, the actual cost will be paid.

  • 1) Application Information: Follow the instructions and provide the required information.
  • 2) Application forms: Please download the form in Word format, input as necessary and then upload in PDF format.
  • 3) Translation fee estimate: Please attach a rough estimate of the translation fee including the native check.
  • 4) Income and expenditure financial statements: Income and expenditure financial statements of the previous year of the organization
  • 5) Materials showing past translation work: If available, please submit examples of past translation work. (Up to 10 A4-size pages within a total of 3MB)

Deadline: 12 p.m. Midday on Tuesday, October 5, 2021


  • * Applications cannot be accepted by post or in person.
  • * The applicant must bear the costs required for submission of the application.
  • * Submitted documents will not be returned.
  • * Completing the online application may take some time. Please commence the process with plenty of time to spare.


  • 1) Selection method
    Selection will be made by the Selection Committee, comprising the Foundation's Arts and Culture Selection Committee Members and outside experts engaged as necessary.
  • 2) Results of the Selection
    Each applicant will be notified of the result of their application by email and on their My Page.

Submission of Report

  • 1)
    Content to be reported
    • Activity Report explaining what applicants achieved with the grant, results made possible by the grant, and the future outlook of their activities.
    • Detailed Statement of Uses of the Grant and the finished translation text. (To be submitted within 30 days of completion.)
      • * In principle the report will be checked by the Administrative Office, and, if necessary, by Selection Committee Members.
    • Any publications containing the translation supported by the grant, including any booklets, catalogs, pamphlets, online media. (To be submitted after publication.)
      • * Submit within 3 months after the translation work is completed, or by the end of March 2023, whichever is sooner.
  • 2) Submission method: Please submit the report using the online application system. Materials, etc. can also be mailed.
  • 3) Deadline for submission: Within three months of making use of the grant or March 31, 2023, whichever is sooner.
  • * If you are unable to complete by the deadline, please submit an interim report.
  • * Note the Detailed Statement of Uses of the Grant must be submitted within 30 days of completion.
