General Research Grant

This grant is awarded for research and development of new materials, processing technologies, new functions and evaluation analysis related to high polymers in science and engineering.

Applications for the 2022 General Research Grant are no longer being accepted.

Application Guidelines

Area of Focus

This grant is awarded for research and development of new materials, processing technologies, new functions and evaluation analysis related to high polymers in science and engineering.

  1. Research on the development of new functional polymeric materials
  2. Research on polymer molding, new synthesis methods, processing technologies, etc.
  3. Research on new technology regarding metal molds to mold polymers
  4. Development of new functional parts using plastics
  5. Development research for polymers compatible with SDGs


As a general rule, researchers in the field of high polymers employed at domestic universities (excluding undergraduate and graduate students)

Size of the Grant

120 million yen in total
The Foundation plans to provide 1 to 5 million yen to each researcher.
The applicant is asked to write the amount estimated for research within the limit of the grant in the application form.

Application Period

Thursday, April 28 - Thursday, June 30, 2022 *Applications must be received no later than June 30.

How to Apply

Each applicant is required to have approval for the application from the head of his/her institution. Examples of qualifying individuals would be the director of your laboratory, your department chairperson, or the dean of your faculty. We recommend that you obtain approval from the highest relevant authority possible.

Submission Method

  1. Application Forms (1 original and 9 copies. Double-sided copy cannot be accepted.)
    If supplementary documents are included, please ensure that they are concise and included with all copies of the application.
    • *Supplementary documents are optional. They would include descriptions of research content.
  2. Please include two standard-size self-addressed envelopes for announcement of the results (1 for the applicant and 1 for the recommender. Clearly write the respective name and address, and include an 84-yen stamp on each envelope.)

Selection Method

  1. The Selection Committee discusses the selection of candidates and the amount of grants to be awarded (in early October), then the Board of Directors makes the final determination.
  2. Announcement of the selection results
    Selection and amount awarded will be announced to individual applicants and recommenders in mid October 2022.
    Please be advised we do not provide an explanation for our decision regarding selection.

Provision of the Grant

  1. Grants will be issued after the required grant agreement between individual successful applicants and the Foundation has been concluded.
  2. If the grant is related to a scholarship, the applicant must submit the official application forms after receiving notification of the scholarship. As soon as all procedures are completed, the Foundation will provide the grant.

Use of the Awarded Grant

There are no restrictions on the use of the awarded grant as long as the grantee uses it in order to effectively progress his/her research and achieve results.
When submitting the "Progress Report," grantees will be required to report how the grant was used in the "Detailed Statement of Uses of the Grant."
There are no restrictions on the budget year or the research period.

Reporting Obligation

All recipients of the research grants awarded by the Foundation are required to submit the "Progress Report" on the form provided by the Foundation, along with the completed "Detailed Statement of Uses of the Grant" form, within three months after completion of the relevant research. The report will be included in the Annual Report and posted on the official website of the Foundation. Please do not exercise copyright or moral rights of the author. If the research period is protracted, we may ask the recipient to submit an interim report. In addition, if any recipient publishes research on the same theme used to acquire the General Research Grant from the Foundation in an academic journal, the recipient must submit a copy of the published research to the Foundation.
