First Round of the 2022 Travel Grant

This grant is awarded to subsidize costs associated with participating in conferences, etc. overseas or the costs of travel for the purposes of putting on an exhibition, etc. overseas.

Applications for the first round of the 2022 Travel Grant are no longer being accepted.

Application Guidelines

Purpose

The purpose is to promote arts and culture through the dissemination of information about Japanese contemporary art overseas by supporting those active in contemporary art to participate in conferences, etc. held overseas or to conduct work for exhibitions that requires international travel.
Activities that have a progressive impact on the field and enhance expertise will be prioritized.
For the 2022 Travel Grant there will be two rounds of applications.

Eligibility Criteria

  • 1) International travel expenses, participation fees, etc. for attending conferences held overseas (international conferences, symposiums, study groups, workshops, etc.)
    Examples of eligible expenses: International airfares (economy class fares between the nearest airports to the place of residence and the location of the activity), accommodation costs in the country to be visited, transportation costs within the country to be visited, expenses related to COVID-19 control measures in the country of residence or the country to be visited (PCR test expenses, quarantine accommodation fees, etc.), conference participation fees, etc.
  • 2) Where exhibitions are being held outside Japan, expenses for international travel, etc. incurred by curators, etc. in the course of transporting artworks or doing other work related to the exhibition.

Period for Eligible Activities for the First Round of Applications

Travel must be commenced and the return journey completed between April 2022 and the end of March 2023.

  • * For the second round of applications, travel must be commenced and the return journey completed between October 2022 and the end of September 2023.

Qualifications necessary to apply

Individuals who have been engaged in specialized duties in the fields of arts and culture for 3 years or more, or individuals who are judged as having similar expertise (based on information provided in their application form). Organizations such as museums and research institutes that dispatch such individuals abroad may also apply, but in principle, only one person per organization may apply for the same event (business trip).

Size of the Grant

Expected total value to be distributed in the first round of applications: 7.5 million yen

  • * The maximum allowable amount per application is 300,000 yen, with actual expenses for economy class-equivalent airfare using the most efficient route to be paid in full or in part.

  • Documents to be submitted
    • 1) Application Information: Follow the instructions and provide the required information.
    • 2) Application forms: Please download the form in Word format, input as necessary and then upload in PDF format.
    • 3) Invitation letter / request letter: If you have received a formal invitation letter or request letter from the organizer for your participation / attendance at the conference, etc., please upload a copy of the letter in PDF format.
    • * Applications cannot be accepted by post or in person.
    • * The applicant must bear the costs required for submission of the application.
    • * Submitted documents will not be returned.

Schedule from Application to Payment of the Grant

  • 1) First round application period: Thursday, April 28 – Midday, Sunday, July 17, 2022
    • * Second round application period: scheduled for Monday, September 12 – Midday, Monday, October 31, 2022
  • 2) Selection period: scheduled for early August
  • 3) Payment of grant: approximately one month from time of selection decision

Selection

  • 1) Selection method
    Selection will be made by the Selection Committee, comprising the Foundation's Arts and Culture Selection Committee Members and outside experts engaged as necessary.
  • 2) Selection criteria
    • 1. The purpose and significance of the conference to be attended
    • 2. The anticipated impact and contribution to the field of contemporary art in Japan
    • 3. Originality and novelty
    • 4. Past achievements of applicant
  • 3) Results of the selection
    Each applicant will be notified of the result of their application by email.
  • * No inquiries regarding selection criteria or selection decisions will be accepted. Your understanding is appreciated.

Cancellation / Postponement of Travel

If you wish to cancel or postpone your travel, or if the conference that was intended for attendance has been cancelled or postponed, please contact the administrative office immediately. If you cancel your trip after the grant is issued, you will be asked to refund the grant. If you postpone your travel, you must inform us of the alternative schedule.

Submission of Report

  • 1) Please submit the Activity Report within 3 months of returning to Japan.
  • 2) Submission method: Please submit the report using the online application system.
  • 3) Please note that this report will be posted in the Foundation's annual report, website, etc.

Regarding Public Announcement of the Grant

Please note that the names of grant recipient individuals and organizations, as well as the name of the supported activity will be made public on the Foundation’s website and other publications, etc.

Copyrights

All copyrights of the deliverables related to this grant belong to the recipients of the grant.
When the Foundation produces public relations materials and publications related to this grant program, it may use the texts and images published in reports, etc. with prior permission.

Revocation of Eligibility and Refund of Grant

  • 1) If information provided in an application form is shown to be false, the application eligibility will be revoked.
  • 2) If after a grant has been paid, information in an application form is found to be false, the grant will be canceled and a refund will be requested.
  • 3) If you do not submit the Activity Report within the time specified, a refund of the grant may be requested.

Declaration

The applicant must not be involved with any antisocial forces.

Privacy Policy

All personal information obtained by the Foundation will only be used within the scope necessary to review, process and finalize the grant.
The Foundation shall not provide personal information to a third party without obtaining the consent of the relevant individual.
