General Research Grant

QWhat kind of research is eligible for the General Research Grant?
AThis grant is awarded for the research and development of new materials, processing technology and new functions regarding high polymers in science and engineering. Please see the Application Guidelines for more details.

QI was a recipient of the grant in the past. Is it possible for me to apply for the grant again?
AAs long as you have submitted the required report on the research you received the grant for, you are welcome to apply again.

QHow can I get the application forms?
AYou can download the application forms from our website.

QWho should I ask to obtain approval for the application as the head of the institution that I belong to?
AExamples of qualifying individuals would be the director of your laboratory, your department chairperson, or the dean of your faculty. We recommend that you obtain approval from the highest relevant authority possible.

QIs it acceptable if the individual granting approval for the application as the head of the institution that I belong to and the recommender are the same person?
AYes, it is acceptable for the same person to do both.

QIf I am receiving a different grant for the same research from a different institution, is it possible for me to apply to this grant too?
AYes, it's possible.

QHow do I submit the report on the research?
APlease download the Report on the Progress of Research and the Detailed Statement of Use of the Grant forms from our website, and then complete and submit them.

QWhen do I need to submit the Report on the Progress of Research and Detailed Statement of Use of the Grant?
APlease submit them within three months following completion of the relevant research.

QIf completion of the research is delayed, is it possible to extend the period of the grant?
AIt is possible; however, you are required to submit a document with the reasons for the extension in advance.

QIs the Report on the Progress of Research released to the general public?
AThe Foundation publishes collections of the reports.

QCan the general overhead and administrative costs borne by the organization that the applicant belongs to be covered by the grant?
AThe Foundation does not allow universities or research institutions to collect overhead costs from the grants.

AIncuVenture is a coined term combining incubation and venture.

QWhat is the Incubation Grant?
AIt is a grant awarded to individuals who have a strong desire to start a business to provide new added value to markets based on new products and technology.

AIt is a grant awarded to individuals who have just started a business to provide new added value to markets based on new products and technology.

QIs it possible to apply for this grant as a group of individuals who are planning to start the business jointly?
AYes, please apply as a group.

QI am thinking about starting a private business. Am I eligible to apply for this grant?
AWe're sorry, but you are not eligible to apply for this grant.

QCan the general overhead and administrative costs borne by the organization that the applicant belongs to be covered by the grant?
AThe Foundation does not permit universities or research institutions to collect its overhead costs from this grant.

QIf part of the development is to be outsourced, would I still be eligible for the grant?
AIf the outsourcing is necessary for the research project, you are eligible to apply for the grant.

QHow can I get the application forms?
APlease locate and download the application forms on the Foundation's website.

QHow should I submit the application forms and supplementary documents?
APlease submit your application by postal service. Please do not bring the application forms to the Foundation in person.

QBecause I have not yet established a company, I cannot fill in the "Capital" and "Executives" columns in the Application Forms.
AYou do not need to fill in these items.

QBecause I have not settled the accounts, I cannot submit documents regarding the settlement of accounts.
ADocuments regarding the settlement of accounts are not required from applicants who have not yet established a company or have not yet issued financial statements.

QMy company has not yet become financially stable. Is it hard to receive the grant?
ABecause this is a venture grant, future potential is prioritized over financial status.

QIs it essential to acquire intellectual property rights and to conduct an investigation to confirm that we are not violating the intellectual property rights of others?
AThey are not always essential, but we consider both to be important points in the future expansion of the business from the projects that start with our grant.

QAre there any cases in which recipients of the grant are required to return the grant?
AThis would be unusual. However, any recipient who is found to have lied, engaged in fraud or to have failed to follow the principle of good faith will be required to return the total amount of the grant.

QAre there any cases in which the Foundation requires applicants to submit additional documents?
AWe may ask applicants to submit additional documents if it is necessary to clarify the content of their projects.

AThe Specific Themed Research Grant is awarded to individuals working on mid- and long-term themes specifically determined by the Foundation.

AIf the grounds for revocation noted in the application guidelines eventuate, such as if information provided in application forms is shown to be false, the grant may be cancelled and a refund may be requested.

AYes. There are no requirements regarding the legal entity status of the applicant organization.

QI'm not a resident of Japan, but am I still eligible for a grant?
AYes. However, the basic condition is that the conference, etc. be held in Japan, or, in the case of online conferences, that the organizer be in Japan. In addition, the applicant must have their own account at a financial institution located within Japan and the grant must be transferred to this account.

QCan a commercial art gallery apply?
AYes. But, the conference, etc. itself must not be run for profit.

QAre general incorporated associations, general incorporated foundations, specified non-profit corporations (NPO corporations), etc. eligible?
AYes. There are no requirements regarding the legal entity status of the applicant organization.

QI am planning to apply for a grant from a different organization. Is it possible to apply for this grant at the same time?
AYes, it is possible to apply concurrently.

QIn the event that the conference will be held during the designated grant period, but before the application is submitted, or before the result of the application is announced, will it still be eligible?
AYes. However, if you would like to submit an application for a conference that has already been held, you must contact the Administrative Office as you will need to submit additional materials such as a conference completion report at the time of making your application.

QIf at the time of application the conference was scheduled to be held in-person, but due to unforeseen circumstances it was switched to an online format, will my grant still be valid?
AYes. But you must inform the Administrative Office of the change.

QIs it possible to apply in both the first round of applications and the second round for regular conferences that are held, for example, every second month?
AIf the content of the conference is the same, then you cannot apply for both.

QWhat happens if the actual expenditure on the eligible item falls below the amount of the grant?
AIf the amount of the grant has already been paid in full, the difference must be refunded.

AThe purpose of the grant is to support international travel, so these circumstances would mean you are no longer eligible for the grant. Please inform the Administrative Office of any changes in your circumstances.

QAs part of preparations for an exhibition, I will hand-carry artworks and related equipment when traveling. Are excess baggage charges, customs clearance costs, and insurance premiums for artworks and equipment covered by this subsidy?
AThese expenses fall within artwork transportation costs, and so are not eligible to be covered by this grant.

QIf I plan to travel multiple times for the same purpose, such as to attend regular bi-monthly meetings, is it possible to apply for grants in both the first and second round of applications?
AIf the meeting relates to the same content, you cannot apply for both.

QIf I plan to travel internationally by a means other than an airplane (railway, ship, etc.), will the travel be eligible for the grant?
AYes. In that case, please explain the reason.

QIf a commercial gallery is exhibiting at an art fair outside Japan, or if the travel is for the purposes of a business trip for business negotiations or delivery, will the travel be eligible for the grant?
AIf the main purpose of the international travel is for profit, it is not eligible.

AYes.

Contemporary Art Translation Grant

QWhat is the purpose of this grant program?
AThe grant aims to support the creation of high quality English-language translation. It also aims to contribute to the spread of knowledge about the diversity of Japanese contemporary art.

AThe translation must be proofread by a native speaker of English. When applying, you must attach a quotation including details of the native check.

AThe proofreading must be completed by someone whose native language is English. (Japanese nationals may conduct the native check as long as they are native speakers of English.)
